This is a simple mindfulness meditation for beginners.
We use a a technique that is great for beginners but people who have much experience might find it useful.
When a thought comes up to distract us, we say the thought in our mind and place it on a leaf in a slow moving river.
This techique enables us to distance oursselves from the thought and return to the breath.

One of the greatest benefits I have found in using the breath as a meditation object, is that we get to see with bodily intelligence that the mind is a control freak. It can’t help but interfere with everything; it isn’t needed at all in the breath but it still tries to take over.
In this talk and meditation we cultivate awareness of our interfernce and allow the mind to relax around it.

In this meditation we pay particular attention to the start of the breathing process. We then turn that heigthened state of of awarness towards the arising of any phenomena; trying to catch the emergence of bodily sensations and thoughts. If we train ourselves to be present for the origin of all phenomena, our mindfulness is strengthened.

We are going to observe the length of the breath, to experience if we are breathing in long or short and breathing out long or short.
This is just a knowing, a knowing as it is happening.
Why? What has the length of a breath got to do with anything?
Looking to see whether a breath is long or short is a way of moving closer into the process of breathing, which is exactly what we are trying to do in mindfulness of breathing.
The more intimate we get with the breath, the more able we are to remain with it, the less we wander away. It keeps the mind awake and engaged.
